Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be in great shape and a strong swimmer to learn how to scuba dive?

Diving is an active sport and the better shape you're in, the easier it will be, but any healthy individual with at least an average fitness level can do it. There is a basic swim test at the start of scuba lessons. You'll need the endurance to swim about 200 yards nonstop, but there's no time limit and it's not a race. The instructor just needs to know that you have basic water skills and are comfortable submerging your face in water. That's it.

What is the minimum age to become scuba certified?
Students must be 10 years old to take our Open Water Diver course. However, if your child is seven years old, he or she can enroll in our Scuba Rangers program.

What scuba equipment do I need for my Open Water Diver certification class?
You need your own personal diving equipment. This includes mask, snorkel, fins and booties.

Am I certified after taking the classroom and pool portions of my scuba course?
Not yet!  You need to complete your four open water certification dives after finishing your academic and confined water training.

How long do I have after finishing the classroom and pool sessions to do my open water checkout dives?
You have twelve months to complete your open water dives after your last confined water training session.

How much will it cost for my certification dives?
This cost will vary depending on where you choose to complete your dives.  Certification dives can be anywhere from $160-$600 and may or may not include your rental equipment, depending on the dive shop.  DiVentures local certification dives run May-September, depending on water temperatures. The four dives cost $100, and weekend equipment rental is an additional $60.

Should I be afraid of sharks?

No. According to the experts, “Shark attack trauma is less common than such beach-related injuries as spinal damage, dehydration, jellyfish and stingray stings and sunburn."

If you are weary of learning to dive because of sharks let us know. We have many safe shark experiences we'd love to tell you about - and you won't have to worry about any run-ins in Nebraska in Missouri.

I haven't been diving in a long time, what should I do?

If you haven't been diving in over a year we strongly recommend taking a refresher course. Refreshers can be set up individually with an instructor at Diventures.
