It's hard to miss the big scuba sign along 120th street. That sign is for the state of the art DiVentures Scuba and Swim Center. It's the newest, largest and most innovative indoor scuba center in the United States and maybe world.
"We felt that the market was undersold here in Omaha, they wasn't a facility like this is the country or world, that we know of, no facility with a pool this big, so we thought we'd put it all under one roof," says Mark Roberts, DiVentures co–owner.
That roof houses a 12,000 square foot facility with a pool reaching 14 feet deep. The pool is ready for scuba training, water aerobics, and birthday parties.Basically anything involving the water and for any age. "We start with kids as young as 6 months old in our swimming classes and run all the way through adult swim training and full scuba training as well, so everything under one roof, a great place and a lot of fun," says Roberts.
Owners Mark Roberts and Dean Hollis have been working for over two years to get it up and running. They want it to be a one–stop shop for all levels of scuba training and equipment. Even though it's only been open a few days visitors marvel at what they see.
"Oh they love it, as far as the pool and facility it's great, you can't ask for anything better and everything is right here," says John Goldapp, Scuba Instructor at DiVentures.
"When we got into this facility people were coming in while we were moving boxes and wanted to see the place, that's what I've been doing all day is touring people, the response has been great and I'm excited to see it," says Roberts.
At least one scuba instructor is always on staff, ready to answer questions or get in the water and teach. Even though it's hard to think of during the heat of summer, DiVentures could be a great way to beat the winter blues, or get ready for a trip to the beach.
"An on–site, indoor pool is a great thing to have because it's year round, I don't care if there is 6 feet of snow on the ground we can be in here, nice and warm teaching scuba," says Goldapp.
The DiVentures Swim and Scuba Center is also going to get a lot of use from local rescue teams. The Omaha Fire Department's Water Rescue team will train in the facility, as well as numerous teams from the surrounding region.
DiVentures is holding a public open house, Saturday, June 19th from 10am to 6pm. There is also a free outdoor concert at 7pm featuring Kelly McGuire.
